Five years ago, I embarked on a transformative journey; I decided to bring Mom home from a dementia care facility. Such facilities often represent the more challenging end of senior care, where individuals with dementia are no longer seen as people with desires and needs but rather as a number to be managed—fed, bathed, dressed, and then returned to bed. The facility offered meals that were neither nutritious nor tasty. She rarely saw the outdoors unless I took her out myself. With only one doctor for 600 residents, the level of care was less than ideal. Despite warnings from doctors, social workers, and even my siblings, who believed she required professional care, I chose to bring her into my home. I thought I was rescuing her from a dire situation, but the truth unfolded beautifully: she was the one who saved me. Living with an elder with dementia is undoubtedly challenging, yet it’s also deeply rewarding. This close, personal interaction with my mother taught me invaluable lessons in forgiveness, patience, resilience and compassion. It has, without a doubt, made me a better person.

If you’re contemplating becoming a caregiver or considering bringing a loved one into your home, know that you’re not alone. Whether you seek support or tips or simply need to vent due to exhaustion or frustration, this is a place of understanding and shared experience. My hope is that through caring for others, you will also discover strengths and virtues within you that you may not have recognized before.
